Spanning 152 kilometers through the heart of the South Island, the Otago Central Rail Trail is more than just a cycle path, it is a journey through New Zealand’s soul. Following the historic route of the former Otago Central Railway, this trail offers a traffic-free, gravel-path adventure that is accessible to all ages and fitness levels.
By booking your experience through New Zealand In Depth, you’ll discover a curated version of the trail that blends luxury accommodation, authentic local hospitality, and the "In Depth" insights that only local experts can provide.

The trail traverses the iconic landscapes of Central Otago, a region known for its dramatic seasonal changes, vast open plains, and the rugged schist rock formations that inspired many of New Zealand's greatest artists.
One of the highlights of the trail is the impressive railway heritage. You’ll cycle across high steel viaducts, like the Poolburn Viaduct, and navigate through hand-cut tunnels that echo with the history of the gold miners and railway workers who built this line over a century ago.
In a quirky and unique twist, the Otago Central Rail Trail is the only Interplanetary Cycle Trail in the world. As you ride, you will encounter scale models of the planets, providing a fascinating sense of perspective as you "travel the solar system" across the vast Otago landscape.

The trail connects a series of charming, historic gold-mining towns, each offering a warm "Southern Man" welcome. From Clyde to Middlemarch, these communities are the heartbeat of the experience.
Central Otago is world-renowned for its Pinot Noir, and the trail offers plenty of opportunities to detour into boutique vineyards. Enjoy "paddock-to-plate" dining at country pubs, visit the historic Ophir Post Office, or stop for a coffee at Chatto Creek. With New Zealand In Depth, we ensure your stops include the best artisan producers and hidden culinary gems.
Your journey doesn't have to end at the bike rack. We can organise unique off-trail experiences, such as a session of indoor curling in Naseby (New Zealand’s curling capital) or a visit to the Hayes Engineering Works, a testament to pioneer ingenuity.

While the trail is free to ride, the logistics of luggage transfers, bike hire (including high-quality e-bikes), and finding the perfect boutique lodge can be complex.
We handle every detail, from meeting you at Queenstown or Dunedin airports to ensuring your luggage is waiting for you at your next accommodation each evening. This "hands-free" approach allows you to focus entirely on the scenery and the ride.
Whether you want a leisurely five-day odyssey or a highlights-only two-day blast, we create a bespoke itinerary that matches your pace. We specialise in finding the "In Depth" accommodation, the converted farm cottages, historic hotels, and luxury lodges that offer a true sense of place.
To make your journey truly spectacular, we can coordinate your trail finish in Middlemarch with the iconic Taieri Gorge Railway trip into Dunedin, frequently cited as one of the world’s great train journeys.
