Snow-covered Wānaka beside Lake Wānaka in winter

A Winter Wonderland

From June to August, New Zealand's winter delivers a crisp alpine charm. In the South Island, snow blankets the mountains - perfect for skiing in Queenstown or sipping wine by a roaring fire in Central Otago. Meanwhile, the North Island offers a milder climate, with Auckland and the Bay of Islands staying relatively temperate. It’s an ideal time for hot springs, glacier hikes, and stargazing under clear, frosty skies.

Spring Awakening

September to November sees New Zealand burst into bloom. Lambs in rolling pastures, and thawing peaks create a postcard-perfect scene. The North Island enjoys pleasant warmth and fewer crowds, while the South Island comes alive with wildflowers and gushing waterfalls. Expect fresh, breezy days, occasional showers, and nature at its most photogenic.

Endless Summer

December through February brings long, sunny days and ideal beach weather. The North Island is warm and vibrant, perfect for coastal drives, water sports, and exploring Māori culture. The South Island dazzles with turquoise lakes, alpine hikes, and bustling summer festivals. It’s peak season - expect energy, light, and unforgettable outdoor adventures.

Autumn Dreamscape

March to May transforms New Zealand into a golden-hued dream. Vineyards in Hawke’s Bay and Central Otago shimmer with autumn colour, while days remain mild and the skies clear. It’s harvest season - ideal for foodies, photographers, and hikers seeking peace and beauty without the summer crowds. A magical time to explore at your own pace.

Best Holiday Ever

We recently returned from a 4.5-week trip travelling around NZ organised by Paul Carberry. We thoroughly enjoyed every single moment. This was in no small part thanks to Paul’s help in the planning and faultless booking of our itinerary. His knowledge of the country seemed to be encyclopaedic.

Super experience with these guys

They were recommended by our friends who had been to NZ with them and they didn’t disappoint. Our plan was to go to Singapore, NZ and Oz over 9 wks and whilst their expertise was in NZ they sorted the lot for us. Paul sorted the international flights and Sally did the rest including transfers, hire cars and accommodations. Sally was very responsive whilst we were planning it all. Would certainly recommend New Zealand in Depth

South Island - trip of a lifetime

Paul/New Zealand in Depth was recommended to us by a friend. As he focuses solely on NZ his depth of knowledge about the country exceeds that of any standard travel agency.

I understand he also travels there regularly each year so knows exactly what he is offering to his clients.

A trip of a lifetime

This was a trip of a lifetime made all the more memorable by Paul’s fantastic planning. It was the care he took in making sure the itinerary met all our needs and expectations that made it so special. We had several chats on the telephone pre booking to find out what we wanted to do, what we wanted to see and the level of hotel/b&b/lodges we expected and he tailored everything to his understanding of our requirements to perfection.

Phenomenal Experience

I recently returned from a 10-day trip to New Zealand (south island) all planned by Paul and New Zealand in Depth. I found his company through an article and immediately knew I was in good hands. Paul was phenomenal to work with! His focus on ensuring my vacation was exactly what I wanted was clear from start. His experience and his intimate knowledge of New Zealand, from historical sites, to restaurants, adventures, and off the path spots that only the locals know about were above and beyond anything I could have planed by myself or through any other travel agent! I have already talked to him about planning my next trip to New Zealand to explore the north island!
