Located in the sparkling waters of the Hauraki Gulf, just north of Auckland, Tiritiri Matangi Island is one of New Zealand’s most successful conservation projects. This dedicated nature reserve is a haven for the country’s rarest endemic birds and rejuvenated native flora.

The island has been inhabited since the first Māori arrivals in Aotearoa. While much of the original ancient forest was once cleared for farming, a massive community effort has restored its ecological heart.
Between 1984 and 1994, dedicated volunteers planted nearly 300,000 native trees, restoring 60% of the island to its former glory. This lush canopy now provides a safe haven for endangered species that have been reintroduced to this predator-free environment.
The island retains its original Māori name, which translates to "buffeted by the wind" or "wind blowing about." This evocative name reflects its prominent position in the Hauraki Gulf, where refreshing sea breezes sweep across the coastal cliffs and forest trails.
Tiritiri Matangi is a popular destination for nature lovers and photographers. Because there are no permanent residents or shops, a little preparation goes a long way.
Accessing the sanctuary is easy. A daily ferry from downtown Auckland or Gulf Harbour (a one-hour drive north of the city) transports visitors to the island in the morning, returning in the mid-to-late afternoon. The journey across the Hauraki Gulf offers stunning views of the Auckland coastline and volcanic peaks.
To protect the vulnerable wildlife, Tiritiri Matangi is strictly predator-free. Visitors are asked to follow biosecurity measures:
There are no catering facilities or cafes on the island. To ensure you have an enjoyable day exploring the tracks, we recommend packing plenty of water and a picnic lunch to enjoy at one of the many scenic lookout points.
