Separated from the west coast of the North Island by the Rauoterangi Channel, Kapiti Island is a nature reserve not only for both the birds and endemic species of the land but also the marine life that surrounds it.
A programme to eradicate introduced stoats and other predatory mammals that have harmed the bird populations has been extremely successful and the island is a haven for endangered bird species that once thrived on the mainland.
The people who live on the island are extremely dedicated to preserving the biodiversity and since the island was first declared a nature reserve over 100 years ago, extreme amounts of hard work and careful planning have been put into its conservation and to get it to where it is today.
Kapiti Island Nature Tours run several types of tours, including an overnight stay on the island to enable kiwi spotting in the dark. The guides are passionate and experienced and enrich your visit to Kapiti Island by regaling stories of the land, its history and the wildlife.
Kapiti Island Nature Tours own the only accommodation on Kapiti Island, Kapiti Nature Lodge, which can accommodate 10 people in 5 units. With only 50 tourists allowed on the island in any one day, this really is exclusivity.
It is a family run business owned by John and Susan Barrett and John’s sister Amo Clark, whose daughter Minnie also runs the day to day stuff. All work closely with the New Zealand Government’s Department of Conservation.
John and Amo’s tribe has lived on the island for nearly 200 years so they are deeply connected to the land they invite you to visit.
