Located just five minutes from the center of Rotorua, Te Puia is New Zealand’s premier center for Māori culture and geothermal exploration. Spanning 70 hectares of the historic Te Whakarewarewa Valley, it offers a powerful connection between the indigenous people and the volcanic land they have called home for over seven centuries.
Te Puia is the guardian of New Zealand’s indigenous creative traditions, serving as the home of the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute.
Visitors have the rare opportunity to witness master carvers and weavers at work. As you watch these intricate crafts unfold, you will learn about the education and celebration of Māori history. Your local guide, many of whom are direct descendants of the original Te Arawa settlers - provide a personal connection to the stories and traditions of the valley.

The Te Arawa people have lived in harmony with this volatile landscape for 700 years. Your guide will explain this deep spiritual relationship, sharing how the tribe has utilized the boiling pools and steam vents for daily life, cooking, and healing for generations.
The valley is a stunning geological mixture of boiling sulfurous pools, bubbling mud, and white silica terraces, all set against a backdrop of native New Zealand bush.
Te Puia is home to the world-famous Pohutu Geyser, the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere. Translating to "big splash" or "explosion," Pohutu can erupt up to 30 meters high, often several times an hour, providing a spectacular display of nature's raw energy.

As the sun sets, the valley transforms into a magical landscape. The evening experience at Te Puia is a world-class immersive journey into Māori hospitality (manaakitanga).
The evening begins with a traditional Pōwhiri (welcoming ceremony) and an intimate cultural performance, including the world-renowned Haka. Following the performance, guests enjoy a delicious feast featuring traditional Māori cuisine and flavours infused by the valley's natural heat.

The night concludes with a journey aboard a motorised waka (tram) through the Valley Under Lights. This unique tour allows you to view the steaming vents and the Pohutu Geyser illuminated against the night ska truly one-of-a-kind Māori cultural experience.
