Experience the Coromandel’s most iconic coastline from the water with Ocean Leopard Tours. Departing from Whitianga, these award-winning boat tours offer a sophisticated and comfortable way to explore the world-famous Cathedral Cove and the rugged volcanic beauty of Mercury Bay.
By booking your sea adventure through New Zealand In Depth, you’ll enjoy a curated journey that prioritizes small-group intimacy, expert storytelling, and unparalleled views of the marine reserve.

While many visitors attempt the long walk to Cathedral Cove, the best perspective is undoubtedly from the ocean. Ocean Leopard Tours takes you beyond the beach, revealing hidden sea caves and towering rock formations that are inaccessible by land.
The Ocean Leopard is a purpose-built vessel designed for a smooth, cushioned ride in all sea conditions. Unlike smaller open boats, it features:
Cruise through the heart of the Te Whanganui-a-Hei Marine Reserve, where nature is at its most vibrant. Your local skipper will guide you past pristine beaches like Lonely Bay and Cooks Beach, sharing the rich history of Captain Cook’s landing and the ancient Māori heritage of the Mercury Bay coastline.

The Coromandel coastline is a geological masterpiece, shaped by volcanic forces over millions of years. This tour brings you face-to-face with the raw power of the Pacific.
Explore the massive Orua Sea Cave, one of New Zealand’s largest, and witness the dramatic "blowholes" where the ocean surges through volcanic rock. The boat’s maneuverability allows you to get deep inside these caverns for incredible photos and a true sense of the earth’s scale.
Keep your camera ready as you navigate the marine reserve. These waters are a haven for biodiversity; it is common to spot dolphins, orca, and seals playing in the wake. Look beneath the surface to see schools of snapper and stingrays in the crystal-clear turquoise waters.
At New Zealand In Depth, we seek out partners who offer more than just a ride. Ocean Leopard Tours is locally owned and operated by a team with a deep, personal connection to this coast.

Every tour is led by a knowledgeable local guide who shares insights you won't find in any guidebook. From the filming locations of The Chronicles of Narnia to the unique weather patterns of the Hauraki Gulf, the stories told on board make the landscape come alive.
Located just a 30-minute drive from Hot Water Beach, a tour with Ocean Leopard is the perfect centerpiece for your Coromandel day trip. We help coordinate your departure times with the tides and other regional highlights to ensure your journey is effortless and immersive.
