Mackenzie Country is dominated by stunning mountains and glacial lakes, making it a very isolated and sparsely populated area of New Zealand.
The domineering Mount Cook, part of the Southern Alps, is the highest mountain in New Zealand, reaching an astounding 3,754m above sea level.
One of very few towns in Mackenzie Country is Lake Tekapo. Lake Tekapo itself is the most stunning and surreal shade of turquoise due to the finely ground glacial rock-flour that is suspended in the water. The Lake is the ideal place to stop for the night - at this altitude the air is so pure and clear, the star-filled skies offer a magical stargazing experience.
