Cycling in New Zealand

Cycling is one of the fastest growing sectors of tourism in New Zealand.  The Government and Ministry of Tourism have invested heavily into improving existing trails and creating new cycle ways on the North and South islands.

The most recent cycle trail to be developed is the West Coast’s Old Ghost Trail.  It has already been named in the top three cycle trails in the world by UK-based Essential Travel and New Zealand’s mountain biking greats the Kennett Brothers believe the trail has the potential to be to cycling what the Milford Track is to walking – among the best in the world.

One of our favourites bike trips is the Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail from Mt Cook to Oamaru which we organised for journalist Lucy Pinto in an article for CADENCE magazine.

We work with a number of companies, who offer self-guided, semi supported and fully guided cycle trips and we can organise a cycle tour as part of your overall New Zealand adventure.

Wearing a cycling helmet is law in New Zealand so you need to be comfortable with this aspect and have some basic knowledge around puncture repairs.

Road cycling is a very popular recreational activity especially among the townies. Each weekend thousands take to the roads to enjoy a relatively quiet trouble free bike ride.  The undulating landscape (hilly at times!) makes this a perfect past time to keep fit.
