Walking on Fox Glacier

Fox Glacier is the West Coast's longest glacier and the best way to explore it is with Fox Glacier Guiding, New Zealand's most experienced glacier guiding company.

There are three guided trips available designed to suit varying levels of fitness and ability from a gentle walk to the terminal face of the glacier to a full day of ice climbing. All equipment is provided and experienced and knowledgeable guides will accompany you all the way.

The Fox Trail Terminal Face Walk is an informative and leisurely trip to the dynamic face of the glacier which is suitable for children from 5 years. It is here that the Fox River emerges from the ice and where ice collapses are often heard and seen. This trip is for people with limited time or for those who would find the walks onto the glacier too strenuous. Although you will not walk on the glacier your guide will take you to the final resting place of the ice that has travelled 12 kilometres from the base of the Southern Alps, all the way to the river valley floor

The Flying Fox is another level of excitement altogether. A fly-in, fly-out half day heli-hike adventure. You will be flown by helicopter to a remote and exceptionally beautiful part of the glacier that is out of the reach of most walkers. This is where the forces of the glacier are at their most dynamic creating spectacular ice caves and arches and you will be able to enjoy a full 2 ½ hours of exploration.

Fox It Up is a day long experience introduces the adventurous to the exhilarating sport of ice climbing, on the spectacular ice walls in the upper part of the Fox Glacier. Your professional guide will tailor the day to offer variety and challenge to the novice and expert alike. Before heading to the ice you will be equipped with specialised mountaineering boots, crampons, ice axes and technical gear. During your thrilling helicopter transfers to the ice you will enjoy breath taking views of the majestic Fox Glacier and surrounds.

Franz Josef Glacier is also near, but the larger, 'less busy' Fox is our favourite.
