It was not our first choice to use a travel company to arrange our trip, indeed we were keen to do the research and plan ourselves. After a suggestion by a friend, however, to explore what options a company could give us and we made first contact with New Zealand In-Depth and our fate was sealed.
Harriet from the start gave us confidence that whatever we had thought we wanted to do she would be able to make it happen and for it to be even better. It is worth saying that our brief was difficult - a honeymoon with an 11 month year old baby, but this did not deter Harriet in creating a package that was unique, manageable with a baby and yet adventurous and varied. She listened carefully to our initial brief and immediately made some suggestions that helped us focus our ideas and consider the broader game plan in terms of length, quantity of travel and mode of transport. From there a suggested itinerary was put together that went through multiple changes, queries, and more changes.
Not once did we feel that we were being difficult and there was never anything too much for Harriet to do. For us our accommodation was going to be key to sleep and enjoyment and Harriet clearly put a great deal of effort selecting suitable motels and hotels within the price range that we were after. One hotel was not quite as expected and we were very impressed with the support we got in country by Rebecca who, even on a weekend, managed to get a last minute change that suited us significantly better.
Whilst in country Harriet was also incredibly helpful and supportive, particularly due to a couple of periods of bad weather that impacted our trip. Some of the highlights for us that we would never have done had we not booked through New Zealand In-Depth were a wine tour of Wahaike Island - a perfect way to start the holiday, a stay at Blue Duck Lodge - a remote farm in North Island leading the way in conservation, a stay at Hapuku Lodge in Kaikoura and a fly, walk, boat tour of the Siberia Valley near Wanaka. Just mentioning these places doesn’t do it justice; the scenery, beauty, friendliness of people you meet and the passion of protecting the environment is hugely inspiring. We can only recommend that others enjoy it as much as us and take the opportunity to go.
