I think it was inevitable that I would work in travel and focus on New Zealand in particular. My dad worked in the airline industry for many years for the likes of BOAC, British Airways and then Air New Zealand before he set up his own long haul travel business.
I had the excitement of growing up imagining travel to distant lands and, after completing a degree in geology and working in the family travel business for a couple of years, I left the UK and spent several months exploring New Zealand.
After coming back to the UK, I worked in the tyre industry of all things for a few years and then decided that this was just too dull and that I’d been away from tourism for too long so I set up my own New Zealand travel company in 2003.
This started as Carberry Travel, imaginatively, and then became New Zealand In Depth. Since then I have been fortunate to have been able to travel back to New Zealand many times, feeling that is more and more like home every time I go.
I'm married to Louise and we have two children, Maddie who is 17 and Ted who is 10.
About the photos
Top: With my daughter Maddie on a stormy winter's day in the Catlins in 2004.
Middle: Before I saw this photo of me during a search for kiwis on Stewart Island, I had no idea I was going bald...
Bottom: My good friends Fergus and Mary in the Catlins. They are true environmental champions and have inspired me to try to make a difference, as they do.
