Tamaki Maori Village
Voyage back to pre-European New Zealand with Tamaki Maori Village set in native forest 15 minutes south of Rotorua.

A Toa (warrior) beneath the carved Waharoa (gateway)
As you are transferred to the village your Tamaki guide will share with you the protocols for visiting marae (meeting grounds). At this time you will select a rangatira (chief) to represent your iwi (tribe) within the welcome ceremonies of the evening.
At the entrance to the village, you will be issued with a wero (challenge). Three warriors emerge from the forest to ascertain and confirm that their manuhiri (visitors) come in peace. A teka (peace token) is laid at the feet of the chief and upon his acceptance, the Powhiri (welcome ceremony) and Karanga (welcome cry from the Maori women) commence. This important stage, paves your way in to the forest village.

Traditional Maori wood carving
The sense of pre-European times is strengthened within this 200 year old forest village space where huge crackling bone fires, traditional whare (houses) and ancient Maori instruments are joined by the Maori people who share pastimes and traditions from this early time in New Zealand's history.
In the wharenui (meeting house) you will learn Maori history and stories that are shared through song, Haka (war dance) and dance.
Your evening will conclude with a traditional hangi feast cooked beneath the ground in earthen ovens that you will share with your hosts and new found friends.
