The CatlinsCatlins ecotours

The Catlins region is found on the south coast of the South Island and it is an area of beautiful scenery with rolling hills, native forest and deserted surf pounded beaches. One of the quietest parts of New Zealand and well off the normal tourist trail, it is also home to Catlins Wildlife Trackers.

Catlins Wildlife Trackers was created by Fergus and Mary Sutherland in 1990. Their 2 day and 4 day ecotours have won several tourism awards and with their lifelong commitment to and knowledge of conservation and education, the Sutherlands provide truly unique and memorable experiences.

During your tour you will learn about New Zealand 's rainforest, its plants, rare wildlife and geology and its history and conservation but with Fergus and Mary you'll get much more than an intimate encounter with nature - your tour is also about people. You will be part of a small group of no more than 8 people and after a few days of sharing experiences, stories and home cooked meals with the Sutherlands and the rest of your group, you'll certainly leave with new friends.

It is also so satisfying to know that your time in the Catlins is making a real difference. The Sutherlands are passionate about conservation and Catlins Wildlife Trackers is an authorised Department of Conservation concessionaire. They work to a code of sustainable environmental practice, make wildlife observations, remove non-native predators and weeds and make monetary and voluntary contributions to conservation.
