World Class Sea Fishing
Whether surfcasting from the beach, spinning off the rocks or boat fishing in the open ocean, New Zealand offers a rich variety of saltwater fishing experiences.
The striped marlin is New Zealand's most recognised game fish and is abundant in the summer throughout the top of the North Island. Black and blue marlin are also frequently caught in the summer months and reach large sizes - a 456kg (1000lb) blue was caught in 1998.
Smaller but still challenging are the various tuna species that are found around the coast. Yellowfin commonly top 100lb, bigeye 250lb and bluefin can exceed 400lb.
Yellowtail kingfish reach their maximum size (over 100lb) in New Zealand waters and are found through the North Island and at the top of the South. This is a powerful sporting fish that is relatively easy to hook but landing them is another story - they are virtually unstoppable when fighting.
Lighter tackle fish include snapper which are as easy to take from the shore as they are from a boat, and kawahai and trevally which offer great sport on salt water fly.
