World Class Freshwater Fishing
Rainbow trout predominate on the North Island growing to exceptionally large sizes by world standards and can be caught year round. Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake and the Rotorua lakes are the most popular spots and the Fish and Game Council do a superb job of controlling the stock levels.
Brownies are the South Island's dominant fish and the remote rivers of the West Coast, Southland, Fiordland and Otago are perfect for backcountry stalking of fabulous trophy fish. Again, brownies are a year round fish although the summer is prime time when insect life is abundant.
The South Island also has the only sea run salmon fishery in the Southern Hemisphere. Quinnat salmon were introduced from North America at the turn of the 20th century and are now firmly established. Three year old fish average 15lb at return and four year olds top 30lb and run from November to April, peaking in February. Metal lures are the ideal method of fishing for quinnat although they will take streamer type feather lures on a heavy fly rod.
