Mackenzie Country &
Mount Cook
Mackenzie Country is dominated by stunning mountains and glacial lakes, making it a very isolated and sparsely populated area of New Zealand.
The domineering Mount Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand, reaching an astounding 3,754 metres above sea level, and is part of the southern Alps.
One of very few towns in Mackenzie Country is Lake Tekapo. Lake Tekapo itself is the most stunning and surreal shade of turquoise due to the finely ground glacial rock flour that is suspended in the water and has a stunning location at an altitude of more than 700 metres. The lake is the ideal place to stop for the night as the air is so pure and clear at this altitude that the star filled night skies are beautiful.
