Wilderness Lodge Lake MoerakiEmbedded_Map_Lake_Moeraki.jpg

Where  In the middle of nowhere on the West Coast of the South Island in the heart of the South West New Zealand World Heritage Area.

What  Wilderness Lodge is a 28 room eco-retreat on the shores of Lake Moeraki and the Moeraki River and is surrounded by lowland temperate rainforest.

The rooms here are spacious and comfortable but the experience is all about the outdoors. Activities include kayaking around the lake, joining guided nature trips and walking either in the forest or out to the beautiful and deserted beaches.

During the spring you will have an excellent chance of watching the rare Fiordland crested penguin which uses the nearby beaches for breeding and nesting.

The Lodge plays an active part in conservation of the local environment and generates its own power through a hydroelectric generator. Ingredients for the delicious cooked breakfasts and 4 course dinners that are included in your stay are sourced locally wherever possible and are served in the River Restaurant.

Who  Once a road building camp and motel, the site was bought by owners Anne Saunders and Dr Gerry McSweeney in 1989 with the vision of protecting the rainforest and its rare flora and fauna.

Why  A stay here is a totally unique experience in one of the most remote areas of the country that will make a genuine difference to wildlife and habitat conservation.

Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki has a sister lodge in the heart of the South Island, Wilderness Lodge Arthur's Pass.
