A paradise for birders and botanists...
Stewart Island is a world of primeval ecosystems with dense rainforests, freshwater wetlands, sand dunes and mountain ranges all accessed by 250km of walking tracks.

Ulva Island - A Natural Ecosystem
A lack of predators has preserved native bird species in abundance and the dawn chorus provided by kaka (parrot), tui and bellbird is unforgettable. This is best demonstrated on Ulva Island, where the eradication of rats has preserved the ecosystem in its original state.
The island also offers the best opportunity anywhere in New Zealand for seeing kiwi in the wild. In fact, the Stewart Island kiwi breaks with the tradition of its nocturnal cousins further north and often forages and feeds on the beach during daylight hours which can extend until late in the evening in high summer.
Whilst Stewart Island is certainly a paradise for hikers, birders and botanists it is by no means reserved for those with special interests.
For anyone interested in enjoying the natural world and experiencing life at an even more relaxed pace than in any other part of New Zealand it is compulsory viewing.
