Central OtagoCentral Otago

In the heart of the Southern Alps, Central Otago is dominated by towering, snow capped peaks and breathtaking lakes. In the midst of this wild and scenic beauty it may come as a surprise to find some cosmopolitan jewels offering mini-city-life in a stunning location.

To the north is Wanaka on the shores of the lake of the same name. In the winter it is base camp for the Cardrona and Treble Cone ski areas which offer some of New Zealand’s best skiing and throughout the year it is the jumping off point for those wishing to explore the rugged and remote wilderness of Mount Aspiring National Park. To add variety, Wanaka is home to attractions as diverse as Puzzling World with its Great Maze and Illusion Rooms and Warbirds Over Wanaka, the largest collection of operational Second World War Aircraft in the Southern Hemisphere.

Queenstown in the winter

The challenging and spectacular drive that is the Crown Range Road, the highest main road in New Zealand, leads south to Queenstown, the larger cousin of Wanaka. It is a cosmopolitan and buzzing mountain resort with a stunning mountain and lake setting on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and overlooked by the Remarkables mountain range. Like Wanaka, Queenstown is a winter ski base and is also considered by many to be the adventure capital of the world. Any number of adrenaline pumping activities can be enjoyed here including white water rafting, jet boating, mountain biking, mountain climbing and, of course, bungy jumping.
