Abel Tasman and Golden BayAbel Tasman National Park and Golden Bay

The north western coast of the South Island is a place of peace and relaxation. It has a great year round climate and the pace of life here is relaxed and colourful with many of the locals being either long established farming families or alternative lifestylers seeking to escape the rat race.

Abel Tasman National Park

Abel Tasman National Park

It is perfect for both the artistic traveller and the lover of food and drink as art galleries, studios and chic cafés abound.

For the more adventurous, the outdoors offers fabulous wilderness opportunities. Abel Tasman National Park is the smallest in New Zealand and is dominated by beautiful golden sandy beaches broken by fascinating granite outcrops.

The calm and sheltered waters are crystal clear and make kayaking the ideal mode of transport for exploring this pristine coastline. If you prefer to keep your feet dry, the Coastal Track is one of New Zealand’s great walks.

Further west from Abel Tasman, up and over Takaka Hill, is Golden Bay. The bay is shallow and sheltered with superb beaches and safe, warm bathing – perfect for a family holiday. Golden Bay’s character is all down to the protection offered by Farewell Spit, the longest sand spit in New Zealand. A visit to this nature reserve is a stunning highlight of any NZ holiday.
