Heritage Expeditions operate voyages from New Zealand to the Subantarctic and Antarctica, offering their passengers a unique opportunity to encounter wildlife and scenery that is rarely accessible. Voyages are limited to 50 passengers, providing comfortable berths and outstanding cuisine prepared by top New Zealand and Australian chefs. The ultimate objective of the company is to allow passengers the maximum amount of time ashore without compromising their comfort and safety.
Originally formed by Rodney Russ in 1985, Heritage Expeditions is still a family-owned company, operating voyages for the adventurous traveller on the "Spirit of Enderby" to the Subantarctic Islands, Antarctica and Pacific. The company has grown to become a leader in worldwide expedition travel and Rodney still regularly leads expeditions with his Expedition Crew on the company’s own ice-strengthened Polar Research Vessel, “Spirit of Enderby”.
The Subantarctic Islands lie to the south and east of New Zealand, and as the seas are often menacing and weather unpredictable, this means that the published itineraries are intended purely as a guide. The remote yet beautiful islands are rich in flora and fauna and are abundant with some of the most unique species of wildlife in the world. They comprise the Bounty Islands, the Snares, the Auckland Islands, the Antipodes, Macquarie and Campbell Island.
Heritage Expeditions support responsible travel and generously contribute to research and conservation in the areas that they visit. The entire team are extremely accomplished in their roles as expedition leaders, biologists, ornithologists and naturalists. They enable their passengers to share these much cherished experiences, minimising the overall environmental impact.
