The Heaphy Track

One of the 'Great Walks', the Heaphy Track covers 82km through a Embedded_Map_Heaphy_Track.jpgwide range of landscapes, from the palm-fringed coastline to the wild rivers of Kahurangi National Park.

Walking over 5 to 6 days, the Heaphy Track connects the Aorere Valley in Golden Bay with Karamea on the West Coast, with every passing day traversing a new landscape through ancient forests, cliffs and expansive rivers (with bridges of course!), encountering all matter of native birds including the kaka and kea as well as the giant rata trees.

The Heaphy Track may be walked in either direction, but most walkers start in Collingwood and finish in Karamea, with plenty of huts and camping pit stops on the way. There are also numerous options for a day tramp.
