White Island - active volcano

Peter and Jenny Tait and all the crew at White Island Tours welcome you to one of the most amazing natural experiences in New Zealand, a fully guided walking tour of White Island, New Zealand's only live marine volcano.

This unique and amazing 6 hour experience includes a comfortable 80 minute boat journey out to the island on one of two purpose built launches, the 60 foot PeeJay IV and the 73 foot PeeJay V.

On the way out to the island the crew will issue everyone with safety equipment which consists of a hard hat and gas mask and upon arrival at White Island PeeJay will anchor and you will ferry over to the island via inflatable boat.

You will spend 1½ – 2 hours walking and touring the inner crater area of White Island. The experienced tour guides will take you through the remains of a historic sulphur mining factory where you will see the bright yellow sulphur crystals. You will view hissing fumaroles, spluttering mud pots, pink lava bombs and you will also be able to venture right up to the main crater's edge to peer down into the steaming and bubbling crater lake.

During the summer and if conditions permit, you may be able to go for a swim whilst out at the island so you may wish to take swimming gear.

After your fascinating walking tour, you will enjoy lunch onboard PeeJay before heading back to the mainland. On the return journey, you will see a variety of bird life and if dolphins, whales or the NZ fur seal are spotted you will be able to spend time with them as White Island Tours have a permit to view the marine life.
