Mason Bay
Mason Bay is a 14 kilometre crescent of sandy beach situated on the west coast of Stewart Island.
It is a great place to go kiwi spotting, provides a chance for you to explore the stunning isolated seascape and see a variety of other native birds and plants.
After a boat trip up Freshwater River to Freshwater Landing, a walk of around 6 hours will take you through manuka groves and across marshland (on boardwalks) towards Mason Bay. There is also evidence of kiwi to mull over and sometimes a surprise daytime sighting!
After "checking in" at the Department of Conservation hut, which is located amongst forest covered dunes, you will head off in search of kiwi. Kiwi are wild birds and sightings are not guaranteed of course but seeing one is a rare privilege and an experience never to forget.
Even without a kiwi sighting, spending the night in such a remote and pristine wilderness area will be a true adventure.
On your second day you will have some time to explore the beach and dunes before heading back to Freshwater Landing to meet the water taxi will take you to Golden Bay Wharf.
To add to the excitement of the experience (or to save your legs!) you could choose to include a flight either out to Mason Bay or or back to Halfmoon Bay.
