Tramping in Fiordland
Strange as it sounds, tramping is the Kiwi word for hiking. Fiordland National Park, the largest national park in New Zealand, is a landscape of sparkling lakes, towering mountains and deep fiords all swathed in dense and unbroken rainforest. Fiordland has earned the reputation of being the 'walking capital of the world'.
The three most famous walks are the Milford, Routeburn and Kepler Tracks and they are the Department of Conservation's premier walking tracks, known as Great Walks, whereas the less familiar Hollyford and Hump Ridge Tracks offer a quieter, different experience. All tracks are clearly marked out, well formed and hut facilities along the tracks are of a high standard.
Walks can be on a guided or self-guided basis depending on confidence and the amount of equipment you intend to carry.
